Do I have your attention? πŸ‘€

Reader, would you believe me if I told you that it had been almost a year since I posted on Instagram?

Shortly after I found out I was expecting, I decided to take a step back from creating and sharing content. I needed to do (a lot) less and if you know me, you'll know that social media is usually the first thing to go when it comes to simplifying my schedule.

Taking breaks from social media have shown me that there's a lot more that I would rather give my attention to than scrolling, scrolling and scrolling some more. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy some good content just like anyone else! But at the time, I noticed I was feeling overstimulated and dysregulated after opening the app. I needed to press pause and interrupt the habit of regularly reaching for my phone.

I've learned that there is a reason why social media is $0.00 -- we pay for it in so many other ways. The currency of social media is our time, our energy and (what is considered incredibly valuable to many brands and companies) our attention.

You'll find that these algorithms are bending over backwards to discover what interests you, entertains you and what captivates you. Because the longer you can stay on their website, the better for them.

As someone recovering from capitalist fatigue, I'm keeping in mind the expensive price that I pay to engage in social media boundary-free. While it's tempting to just keep scrolling, I've had to curb passively engaging and get intentional about what I'm using social media for.

Reader, this is a topic that I've been yearning to break down in a Gmichelle way. πŸ˜‰
